Astral Media Inc. celebrates this fall its fiftieth anniversary. Founded in September 1961 in Montréal, by brothers Harold, Harvey, Sidney, and Ian Greenberg, Astral has become one of the most admired media companies in the country.
“Astral's longevity and successes have as much to do with our vision and efficient operations as with the strength of our business relationships with our partners established over the years, the quality of our platforms and brands, our innovative programming, as well as our audiences and clienteles' affection for our Company,” said Ian Greenberg, Astral Co-founder, President and CEO. “And, I can certainly not underestimate the important contribution of past colleagues and the current company leadership.”
As Astral launches its fiftieth anniversary celebrations, it also marks a major milestone in its history: with today's closing of its fiscal year, Astral registers its fifteenth year of consecutive growth—an accomplishment few Canadian companies have achieved. From 1996 to 2011, corporate media revenues grew from $100 million to over $1 billion.
After its beginnings in 1961 as photo concessions in department stores, the Company became mostly involved in the film industry during the 70s and 80s, and then launched a major transformation to become a pure-play media company in the mid-90s. Today, Astral operates several media properties—pay and specialty television, radio, out-of-home advertising, and digital—among the most popular in the country and has attracted partners of such prestigious brands as Disney, HBO, Virgin, and NRJ.
Over the course of its history, Astral has become and remains one of the largest private Canadian investors in film, television, and music. Determined to deliver top quality programming across its media properties, Astral has invested over $170 million per year to support both the development of television and film productions, as well as home-grown music performers and songwriters. This contribution has reached $1.9 billion since Astral's debut in television and radio.
“At Astral, we are proud and honoured to support and promote our artists and to do our share in the 45 cities and eight provinces where our 2,800 employees work and play,” said Ian Greenberg.
Astral will mark its fiftieth anniversary this fall by featuring a new section on with photos and videos highlighting its history, by airing a special 50th corporate identity to mark the occasion with its audiences, and by holding various events to thank partners, contributors and employees.
