HotDocs 2017

Julie El-Chaer
Jump into the world of North America’s largest Documentary Festival! Early this week the HotDocs Canadian Documentary Festival held a press conference to announce their line-up for the 2017 festival from April 27th to May 7th. With 2906 entries, the 24th annual HotDocs Fest narrowed down the official selection to 13 programs that will feature 230 documents from 58 countries! With work coming from around the world, about 48% of the official line up is by female filmmakers! We are also pleased to say that HotDocs will have Redux; a full program dedicated to the female Canadian filmmakers and sponsored by Bell Media.

If you are looking for a documentary with a touch of humanity, maybe “Thank You for the Rain” is the film for you. Coming from the International Spectrum, Thank You for the Rain follows Kenyan farmer Kisilu Musya on his journey to the COP – the United Nation’s Framework Convention on Climate Change. Musya believes he has the answer to stopping global warming in his community, and with the help of his wife and filmmaker, Julia Dahr, he has the opportunity to get his voice heard.

If you are interested in documentaries with more of a comedic side, the Magnificent Obsessions program offers the viewing of the documentary, “Pecking Order,” a film about the members of the Christchurch Poultry, Bantam and Pigeon club in New Zealand. Leading up to the 2015 National Poultry Show, the film follows the club as good clean fun turns into competitiveness between members.

These are just a couple of the many, many documentaries part of the HotDocs lineup. If you wanted to download the full HotDocs schedule, click here. You can head to the website to watch trailers, read up on each film, and buy your tickets today!
